Sometimes a motorcycle adds up to more than the sum of its parts. This is certainly the case with the BMW F650 GS Dakar. My first experience with the Dakar was in May 2002 when I attended a 2 day BMW off road course in Wales. One of the bikes available was the Dakar which I chose. For 2 days we experienced all sorts of terrain that you would not have thought possible that a motorcycle could cope with. What surprised me was that I could do everything off road on the Dakar that I could on a more specialised Husqvarna that I owned at the time. Unlike the Husqvarna the Dakar is equally at home on the road, and is supremely comfortable for rider and passenger, and able to carry full hard luggage. The Dakar is powered by a single cylinder 650cc engine, fitted into a lightweight (for BMW) chassis, and has useful extras like ABS and heated grips. This motorcycle can be used to safely explore off the beaten track, by using the gravel roads of the South Island. Fitted with dual purpose tyres, and 21 inch front wheel it is equally at home on loose surfaces, as well as conventional roads. You can go places that would be impossible to go to with other motorcycles with both the Dakar and Sertao. A great opportunity to explore the hidden gems of New Zealand.
